The conditional form can be used to describe a hypothetical situation that might not be true.

札幌に住んでいれば、毎日スープカレーを食べる。
If I lived in Sapporo, I’d eat soup curry every day.

This structure can also be used with the past tense.

自転車に乗って来れば、間に合った。
If I’d come by bike, I would have been on time.
